El Cantante Trio is a Johannesburg-based Latin roots acoustic outfit blending the rich traditions of bolero, rumba, salsa, mambo and folklórica with their own intimate, stripped-back style.
Fronted by Nuyorican vocalist Cito (born in Los Angeles, raised in New York City, and inspired by his Puerto Rican heritage), the trio brings together heartfelt storytelling, vibrant rhythms, and acoustic interpretations of both Latin classics and contemporary favourites. Alongside guitarist Martin Schofield and percussionist Riaan van Rensburg, El Cantante Trio has become known for their warm and energetic live performances, regularly appearing at Latin venues such as Mama Samba, Cinco de Mayo and Día de los Muertos celebrations, and cultural showcases including Festival de Mexico.
Their debut live-recorded album, Recuerdos Del Alma, captures the spirit and authenticity of the trio perfectly, celebrating the timeless music that shaped Cito’s upbringing while honouring musical traditions from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico, Argentina and beyond. The trio also featured as part of the WOMAD Spanish Music Celebration in2025, sharing stages alongside internationally renowned flamenco guitarist Raul Rodriguez, flamenco vocalist Rey Chams, and celebrated South African percussionist Sabu Jiyane — further cementing their place as one of South Africa’s most distinctive Latin acoustic ensembles.
